Dr. Douglas Schuster is a resident physician at Albany Family Medicine in Albany, NY. He was born in Texas but grew up in Southeast Asia, where his father worked as a chemical engineer. He spent ten years in Jakarta, Indonesia, which left him with a lifelong interest in global health. Initially, he spent his early years out of high school as a music teacher. Eventually, he went back to college to study public health, which led to his position as a research epidemiologist with the Texas Department of State Health Services, studying the transmission of HIV, tuberculosis, and the West Nile virus before moving on to medical school. Dr. Schuster received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine in Dothan, AL, his Master of Public Health from Yale University in New Haven, CT, and his Bachelor of Arts from St. Edward’s University in Austin, TX, where he majored in history and the pre-medical sciences. He also holds a post-baccalaureate certificate in Public Health Leadership and Clinical Informatics from the University of Texas. Dr. Schuster chose family medicine because he wanted his work to make a real difference in people’s lives. Of all the specialties he has encountered throughout medical school, it was in family medicine that he felt he could help the most people. He also feels the broad scope of practice will allow him to pursue global mission work abroad after completing residency training. In his free time, Dr. Schuster enjoys playing piano and guitar, studying classical music history and the lives of great composers, and is a lifelong student of the Indonesian language.
