Dr. Alexandra Colón Taffany is board certified in pediatrics and a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, and the Gold Humanism Honor Society. She received her Doctor of Medicine from the State University of New York at Buffalo, Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in Buffalo, NY. Following this, Dr. Taffany completed her pediatric internship and residency at the University of Rochester, Strong Memorial Hospital/Golisano Children’s Hospital in Rochester, NY. She began her studies at The New York University Tisch School of the Arts, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in theatre with honors.
Dr. Taffany decided to pursue medicine after graduating from undergrad. She began working as a Standardized Patient at Albany Medical College. Almost immediately, Dr. Taffany was drawn to what the medical students were learning (both with the medical information and the interpersonal connections). One of her favorite memories is treating NICU graduates at follow-up appointments. From being in the delivery room at these children’s births to seeing them thriving (after many months and complications), Dr. Taffany believes there is something amazing about seeing the resilience of children and the power of modern medical advances.
During medical school, Dr. Taffany feels very lucky for the opportunities she had throughout her pediatric rotations. As a fourth-year resident, she was able to take more pediatric electives, which solidified her decision to pursue pediatrics. She is interested in breastfeeding, developmental disabilities, and using the biopsychosocial model.
Dr. Taffany loves getting to know her patients and their families and helping them become their healthiest selves. She says, “Each age group has their own goals, and whether that is helping a newborn to latch and feed better or to help adolescents blossom into young adults, I love being able to see the growth and development of my patients and families.” Dr. Taffany believes finding out her patients’ motivation and reasoning can make a big difference, and taking the time to listen and hear their concerns helps her as a provider and helps the patients and their families be heard. She lives by the motto, “Treat others as you wish to be treated.” Dr. Taffany thinks this quote extends perfectly into medicine.
Dr. Taffany is originally from Clifton Park, NY. Outside of medicine, she loves hanging out with her daughter, María Rose. She is a huge fan of theater (musicals and Shakespeare are her favorite) and enjoys working out on her Peloton bike. Also, Dr. Taffany has run the Disney marathon twice!
