The members of the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE) Board of Directors have announced changes to the designation of the certification credentials for diabetes educators. From the start of 2020, the Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) designation has transitioned to Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES). Additionally, they have changed the classification of the specialty title from 'diabetes educator' to 'diabetes care and education specialist.'
 
The goal of the NCBDE was to ensure that these credentials reflect what is happening in the health care environment. This includes:

• Promoting person-centered care
• Driving integration
• Focus on behavioral health
• Leveraging technology
• Integrating related conditions
• Achieving the quadruple aim of population health
• Quality of the patient's care experience
• Costs associated with care
• Meaningfulness of the provider's experiences

The NCBDE Board of Directors believes that changing the name of the certification credential best reflects the specialty's current designation and its future.
