What is Physical Therapy Month?
October is recognized as National Physical Therapy Month, which was inaugurated by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) in 1992. This gives us the opportunity to celebrate all physical therapy professionals and appreciate the power of physical therapy. Physical therapists provide services that help develop, maintain, and restore people’s movement and functional ability. And they can help people at any stage of life. When aging, injury, diseases, conditions, disorders or environmental factors threaten your movement and function, a physical therapist can help you through it.
What Can They Do?
Physical therapists:
- Make recommendations for self-management
- Formulate a diagnosis, prognosis and plan
- Undertake a comprehensive examination/assessment of a patient
- Evaluate the findings from the examination/assessment to make a clinical judgment regarding the patient
- Provide consultation within their expertise and determine when patients need to be referred to another healthcare professional
Community Care Physical Therapy
Our physical therapists are knownfor their professionalism, expertise and personal attention to patients. Helping to rehabilitate after injuries or surgery, making positive changes in their lifestyle, and regain control of their bodies again, putting them on the path to a healthier and stronger life.
In honor of Physical Therapy Month, we’d like to highlight our dedicated physical therapists from our Delmar location.
Ashlee Scofield, PTA
“Patients have taught me to always keeping smiling and make physical therapy fun and positive, even when it isn’t always enjoyable.”
Ashlee earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology with a concentration in Pre-Physical Therapy from Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, as well as her Associates Degree as a Physical Therapist Assistant from Berkshire Community College. She was born and raised in the Capital Region with a high interest in athletics, sports-related injuries, orthopedic/post-operative injuries, and geriatric patients. Prior to joining Community Care Physical Therapy, Ashlee worked in a hospital setting, outpatient, and nursing home facilities. Ashlee chose to specialize in physical therapy because she was always involved in sports and witnessed several injuries. This led to her interest in learning how to fix and heal the body. Her favorite part of the job is getting to see patients’ outcomes and watching them reach their goals.
Cheryl Bruen, PT, DPT
“I chose to work in healthcare because I wanted a career where I would meet a variety of individuals and hopefully make a positive difference in their life. I also desired a career that is constantly evolving so I can continue to learn and be challenged each day.”
Cheryl Bruen is a board-certified physical therapist at Community Care Physical Therapy. She primarily practices at the Delmar location at 250 Delaware Avenue. Cheryl received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy and her Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science, with a minor in Psychology, from the Nazareth College of Rochester. Cheryl completed her clinical rotation in facilities throughout New York State, focusing on inpatient and outpatient orthopedics and patients with neurological and developmental disabilities. She has collaborated with interdisciplinary teams over her career to evaluate and treat pediatric, adult and geriatric physical therapy clients.
Originally from Schodack, NY, Cheryl chose to return home to practice in the Capital Region. She enjoys outdoor activities throughout the various seasons, especially skiing in the winter. She has a special interest in orthopedics and sports related injuries. Cheryl most enjoys interacting with patients and seeing them improve and make a full recovery, which is her favorite part of working in orthopedics. Cheryl is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. She has been active in educating the community about fall prevention and workplace injury prevention.
Morgon Fernaays, PT, DPT
Morgon Fernaays is physical therapist at Community Care Physical Therapy, practicing primarily in Latham at the Capital Region Health Park. He knew early on that Physical Therapy was his passion.
"I chose to pursue a career as a healthcare professional after my own personal experience with physical therapy after a shoulder surgery in high school. I saw physical therapy as an opportunity to help people physically and emotionally as you work with them throughout their rehabilitation. I genuinely enjoy this field of work, the treatments we utilize, the patients I am able to connect with, and hope to become a known and respected member or this field."
Morgon received his Doctor of Physical Therapy from the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York. He completed his clinical rotation in facilities across the Capital Region, focusing on outpatient physical therapy and orthopedics, inpatient acute care, and sub-acute rehabilitation. He has a specific interest in hands on manual therapy.
