Memorial Day Weekend

It's almost Memorial Day weekend! But don't worry, you can still celebrate at home. Yes, you need to be safe and follow social distancing guidelines, but it's also important to remember what Memorial Day is all about. A day to honor our fallen soldiers. Normally, you probably have family over for a picnic, maybe go to a Memorial Day party with friends, or attend a parade or concert, but this year is a little different. Don't let the coronavirus pandemic stop you from celebrating Memorial Day. There's no problem celebrating safely at home. That's why we rounded up some different ways to make this year's Memorial Day weekend as eventful and fun as the rest of them.

#1 Thank a Vet

Do you have any active or retired military members in your life? If so, take this time to thank them! Take a few minutes to pick up the phone, hop on FaceTime, or write a letter and thank your honored veteran for their service. We promise it will brighten up their day!

#2 Tour a Virtual Memorial Exhibit

Have you ever wanted to experience the nation's most beautiful war memorials? Google Arts & Culture has the perfect solution to let you do just that. Google Arts & Culture has a great 360° tour of America's most famous veteran and war memorials with accompanying information. You can learn all about the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., and the United States Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia, from the safety of your own home.

#3 Send a Care Package

Support our service members who are currently abroad and can't celebrate Memorial Day at home or with their families by sending a care package. You can honor our fallen heroes by helping our existing ones. There are plenty of active-duty soldiers that could use some positivity from someone back home. Support Our Troops (SOT) is a fantastic organization that handles any supportive mail you would like to forward along to active service members. Visit the website to learn how to write to a soldier and how to address your cards or letters. They have a compiled list of what type of items to include in a care package so you can be sure you are supplying goods that will make a difference. You can buy and ship the items directly, or you can donate to Support Our Troops online if you instead make a monetary contribution. So, gather your family, follow the SOT guidelines, and make a soldier smile today!

#4 Virtual Memorial Day Concert & Parade

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, many things have been canceled, postponed, or moved to the internet. The 2020 National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C. has been canceled, but a special pre-recorded broadcast called "The National Memorial Day Parade: America Stands Tall" will be aired for free on ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX stations nationwide on Memorial Day.

And, you can tune into the National Memorial Day Concert for a moving tribute that honors America's servicemen and women from the comfort of your home. It will be aired on Sunday, May 24, from 8:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on PBS.

#5 Backyard Campout (weather depending, of course)

Turn your backyard into the great outdoors! If you have a tent and a few sleeping bags, set them up and camp outside for the weekend. Spend time playing cards, making s'mores, popping popcorn, and singing around the campfire. Or, if it's not outdoor camping weather, campIN instead!

#6 Grill Out

You don't need a party to grill up your favorite foods to enjoy on Memorial Day. Whether it's hot dogs, burgers, smoked brisket, salmon, maybe even portobello mushrooms, Memorial Day weekend is your weekend to step up your grill game! If you have a quarantine-inspired chef in the house, put them to the test and make the ultimate Memorial Day dinner.

#7 Decorate Your House

Go red, white, and blue! Give your house a much-needed patriotic lift. There are plenty of ways you can show your appreciation for all the men and women who served our country.

#8 Create a Sidewalk Mural

Kids of all ages, even preschoolers, can get into the spirit of celebrating Memorial Day. Grab some sidewalk chalk and have them create a giant mural of the American flag.

Memorial Day is a special holiday that you can still enjoy at home. But don't forget the most important thing about this special holiday – to remember and honor our soldiers and all that they've done for us.

Have a happy Memorial Day!
