Sometimes when we start to eat healthy or are on very strict diets, we tend to eat the same type of food over and over again. But sometimes those foods can do more harm than good when eaten in large quantities:
1.Oranges and Tomatoes
These two types of foods are very healthy for you, yes, but it's important not to overindulge in these summer staples because of their high acid level. Consuming foods high in acid could lead to reflux and could worsen reflux if you already have it. Over an extended period of time, reflux can cause Barrett's Esophagus, a disorder in which precancerous lesions form on esophageal lining. Stick to no more than two servings of oranges or tomatoes a day and avoid these foods if you have acid reflux.
2.Canned Tuna
This low-cal fish is definitely a healthy alternative to some other proteins and is a great food to turn to if you're on a strict diet. However, tuna contains high levels of mercury and if consumed in large quantities can be dangerous. Excessive mercury intake can lead to vision problems, impaired hearing and speech, lack of coordination, and muscle weakness. Don't consume more than 3-5 cans of tuna a week and try swapping out tuna for healthier alternatives such as salmon and cod.
3.Water
Hydration is key to a healthy lifestyle and most of us don't consume enough of the stuff. But too much water consumption can lead to something called water intoxication. This occurs when extreme water intake dilutes the sodium in the body, which then results in an abnormally low blood sodium level. This can lead to impaired brain function and even death. So how much water is too much? If your urine is transparent all the time, ease up on the water.
4.Soy
Soy is a great meat alternatives for vegetarians and vegans, but look out because this stuff can inhibit iron absorption! It's already difficult enough for vegans and vegetarians to maintain sufficient iron levels, so inhibiting any iron from being absorbed can be dangerous, leading to anemia. Soy also contains estrogen-like compounds so long-term consumption of soy has the potential to cause endometrial hyperplasia, a proliferation of the uterine lining that can lead to uterine cancer. There's not exact amount of soy that will lead to problems, but it's probably smart to stick to 1-2 servings per day.
5.Spinach
While this leafy green is packed with iron, fiber and protein, spinach is also high in lutein, a carotenoid that may help prevent age-related macular degeneration (a common cause of vision loss and blindness). Spinach is also high in oxalate, a compounds that can lead to the formation of kidney stones, so patients with calcium oxalate kidney stones should avoid overdoing it with the spinach.
6.Brazil Nuts
This crunchy snack is full of protein and fiber, both of which are great for your body. However, these nuts are extremely rich in selenium, a nutrient that can be toxic if consumed in large quantities. Taking too much selenium in can result in hair loss, brittleness or loss of nails, dermatitis, neurological abnormalities, and in severe cases, death. Limit yourself to 10 brazil nuts per day.
7.Lean Animal Protein
Primarily relying on low-fat meats and eggs can be a good choice for weight loss, but it can also be dangerous. Animals proteins makes your body produce the hormone insulin-like growth factor 1, which promotes aging and increases your risk of cancer (particularly breast cancer) when present in high levels. A study published in the journal Cell Metabolism found that there was a four-fold increased cancer risk abd a 75% increase in mortality in people who got at least 20% of their calories from lead meats. Try getting the majority of your proteins from beans, legumes, nuts, seeds, plants, and whole grains. Also try out "meatless Monday" with your family and go meat-free one day out of the week. This green rice with smoky sweet potatoes and black beans is a great recipe to try for meatless Monday!
