Summer is approaching and the warm weather makes our outdoor workouts a little tougher and maybe even dangerous at times. It's important to continuing exercising in the summer weather, but be sure to follow these simple steps to keeping cool during your summer workout:
-
Don't Forget to Hydrate!: Keeping hydrated is extremely important during the summer months, especially when you are working out outdoors. Before heading out, drink at least 8 ounces of water. During your workout, bring a large water bottle with you and be sure to take water breaks when needed. When you get back from your outdoor workout, be sure to drink another 8 ounces of water.
-
Timing is Key: Try to exercise during the cooler parts of the day. This is usually the early morning or late evening.
-
Don't Push Yourself: Don't push yourself harder than your limits. Your body will let you know when it's had enough so listen to it! If you feel yourself getting light-headed or fatigued, sit down and take a break or end your workout early.
-
Dress Appropriately: Wear loose fitting workout gear. Avoid cotton and long sleeves and sweats. Light-colored and breathable clothing is best.
-
Understand the Signs of a Heat Stroke: Familiarize yourself with the signs of a heatstroke and how to recognize them in yourself or in a friend you're working out with. Signs of a heatstroke include: Warm, dry or moist skin, strong rapid pulse, confusion, high body temperature (above 103 degrees F), throbbing headache, nausea or vomiting.
Stay healthy and safe on your outdoor workout this summer!
