Youth Sports Safety Tips

National Youth Sports Week is observed the week of July 16th – 22nd and is a great time to talk about sports safety! When your children participate in sports, they can benefit from improved social development and overall good health and wellness. However, there is always a potential for injury. You can follow these safety tips to help prevent sports injuries so your kids can continue to have fun in the game.

Use the Right Gear 

Make sure your little athlete is using the right equipment to play the sport. This may include helmets, shin guards, mouth guards, ankle braces, cleats, knee and/or elbow pads, and sunscreen. It's also important to check that their sports gear fits properly to help prevent or reduce injuries. Remind your children not to assume that protective gear will prevent all injuries, they should still try to play safely.

Warm Up, Stretch, and Rest

Whether you're a coach or parent, set aside time before every game and practice to make sure they warm up properly. Stretching before games and practices can help release muscle tension and prevent injuries. Remember to have them take at least one day off to rest each week so their bodies can recover. Do NOT let them play through pain. 

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Learn the signs and symptoms of dehydration and other forms of heat-related illness. Send your little athlete to games and practices hydrated and with a bottle of water. Encourage them to stay hydrated and remind them to drink plenty of water before, during, and after the game. 

Don't forget to show your support for your little athletes and make sure they are having fun playing the game. Establishing these safety guidelines for your child when they play can help prevent and reduce the severity of sports-related injuries.
