Skip Junk Food in Late Pregnancy

Excess consumption of junk food in late pregnancy stages may be more harmful to the child than excess junk food consumption during early stages of pregnancy, according to researchers at the University of Adelaide.

Scientists have found that women who consume large quantities of junk food during late pregnancy put their child at higher risk of developing a sugar addiction during adolescence. Because the opiod and dopamine signaling pathway, which is the reward system, grows the fastest during the stages of late pregnancy and adolescence, it is most vulnerable to medications. It is believed that if the mother consumes excess junk food during early pregnancy stages and then consume healthy foods during late pregnancy, that this may be able to counteract the negative effects of the junk food during early pregnancy.

The hope of the study is to educate pregnant women about the long-term effects of their diet on their child's life-long health and food choices. It's important to make healthy food choices during all stages of pregnancy. Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, lean meats, and whole grains.
