How are you supposed to stay in shape and avoid packing on pounds this winter if it doesn't warm up? Well not all winter activities have to be enjoyed in the great outdoors. This list is for people who really want to keep exercising this winter but can't stand the cold!
Indoor Winter Fitness Ideas
1. Swim at an Indoor Pool – What could make you forget about the cold weather and make you think of summer more than swimming in a pool! Sure, it's cold out in the parking lot, but in the water it's 82 degrees! Swim some laps this winter and get a head start on sculpting next summer's beach bod!
2. Take a Fitness Class – What better way to get in shape than to take a class from a certified instructor? You can meet new people while you experience something new. 3. Join a Gym – If you prefer an individual workout, then a gym membership might be right for you. At the gym you will find access to all of the latest fitness equipment. Many gyms also offer services from a personal trainer to help get you started or to help you perfect your technique.
4. Workout at Home – If joining a gym isn't your thing, try working out at home. Whether it's doing push-ups, doing sit-ups, or popping in your favorite exercise DVD, there are plenty of ways for you to work out at home. Be creative and come up with your own routine!
5. Curling – Curling was invented by the Scottish so they had a game to play in the winter months when they couldn't golf. Curling looks like a leisurely game but deceptively offers a good workout. Joining your local curling club could help you stay active this winter, and just might help you find a new favorite pastime!
6. Restorative Activities – Restorative activities like yoga or tai chi are great way to exercise this time of year. They can help rejuvenate the body and mind while building strength, increasing flexibility, and helping you relax. You'll leave each session feeling refreshed and energized!
7. Indoor Basketball – It's hard to find a gymnasium that doesn't have a basketball hoop at either end of the court. Basketball is the ultimate indoor sport. Join a recreational league or get into a regular pick-up game. It doesn't matter how you do it, just play!
8. Other Indoor Sports – Sure, the gymnasium was built for basketball, but that doesn't mean that's the only sport you can play there. If basketball isn't your thing, try indoor soccer, squash, handball, or a number of other indoor sports. It doesn't matter how you do it, just play!
9. Ice Hockey – Hockey is definitely a winter sport, but that doesn't mean you have to brave the elements to play. Many indoor ice rinks are open year round but we don't always think about them until the cold weather rolls around. Throw on a pair of skates and hit the ice!
10. Ice skating/Figure skating – Maybe contact sports aren't your thing. That doesn't mean you shouldn't still get to enjoy some ice time. Ice skating is a great way to exercise in the winter months. If traditional skating seems too easy for you, give figure skating a try and become a master of the ice!
