Caren is a certified nurse midwife and has been providing midwife care at this practice for 19 years. She earned her Bachelor Degree in nursing from the State University of New York at Buffalo in Buffalo, NY. She went on to receive her Masters of Midwifery from the University of Perugia School of Midwifery in Italy. Her passion for learning earned her several nursing scholarships and she graduated summa cum laude. She completed the Booth Maternity Internship Program, which is affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania.
Caren has always wanted to work in women’s health. She knew she wanted to work with women after her nursing school experience with women’s self-help clinics:
“I learned early in my education about the strength of women and their special health care needs. In those days birth was not ‘family centered’ and laboring women were treated very differently from how they are treated today. I knew I wanted to help women have more control over their birth experience.”
Caren has a special interest in OB/GYN and midwifery. She enjoys the maternity labor support she gets to provide to patients and being there for the moment of childbirth. When asked about her favorite moments she said, “Watching the mother after birth… witnessing the prideand accomplishment that comes with birth is a true joy. I am repeatedly amazed at the courage, strength and instinctual beauty of a women giving birth. It is truly an honor and privilege to be any assistance at such an important time in a person’s life. I am so lucky to get to be part of a miracle.”
When Caren isn’t working, she enjoys being a proud mother of three children. She is relearning piano and enjoying trips to Italy where she meets old friends, colleagues, and even some babies she “caught”. Caren also takes part in not-for-profit organizations, specifically The Giving Circle. Caren and her close friends created this midwife project to help raise funds to provide a midwife in Uganda to those in need.
